SUBJECT: A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COMPTON
AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO RENAME THE ONE
HUNDRED BLOCK OF AUTO DRIVE SOUTH TO EAZY STREET
SUMMARY
Approval of the attached resolution will authorize the City Manager to rename the One
Hundred Block of Auto Drive South to Eazy Street in honor of the renowned entertainer
Eric Lynn Wright professionally known as Eazy-E, whose legacy posthumously has
contributed to the hip-hop music industry around the world.
BACKGROUND
The late entertainer Eazy-E, was born and raised in the City of Compton and rose to
fame for what is known as West Coast rap and Gangsta rap as part of the group N.W.A.
which formed in Compton California.
The group launched the careers of hip-hop icons, such as Eazy-E, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre,
MC Ren and many others. In 1988, N.W.A. released the colossal hit song “Straight
Outta Compton”.
Eric Lynn Wright otherwise known as Eazy-E, has been called the “Godfather of
Gangsta rap”, a rap pioneer and a legend. The renaming of the One Hundred Block of
Auto Drive South to Eazy Street will keep this hip-hop icon’s name engraved in the
history of Compton
The proposed selected street location in the City of Compton is currently named Auto
Drive South. Honoring Eazy-E in the One Hundred Block of this location will be a lasting
tribute to the art of hip-hop music that continues to be appreciated by his family and
fans worldwide.
STATEMENT OF THE ISSUE
The City of Compton Facilities Naming Policy, adopted June 20, 2014 provides a
process and guidelines for naming facilities in a manner that will provide an easy and
recognizable reference to the City’s residents and visitors.
Section 2 (B) of the City’s Policy defines support facilities: City-owned facilities that
support field operations, support facilities include, without limitation the City corporate
yard, pump stations, roads, bridges and any new or future facilities.

Section 1. That the City Council of the City of Compton does hereby approve the
renaming of the One Hundred Block of Auto Drive South to Eazy Street in honor of the
renowned entertainer Eric Lynn Wright, otherwise known as Eazy-E.
Section 2. That the City Manager is directed to initiate procedures to rename the
One Hundred Block of Auto Drive South Street to Eazy Street in adherence to City of
Compton’s Policy Governing the Naming of City-Owned Facilities and Land through
Resolution Number 23958 (attached).
Section 3. That a certified copy of this Resolution shall be forwarded to the City
Attorney, City Clerk, City Manager’s Office, and the City Controller’s Office.
Section 4. That the Mayor shall sign and the City Clerk shall attest to the adoption
of this Resolution.

I was only 17 years old when Eazy-E passed away. His music had a great impact on my life growing up. I believe I must have been 10 years old when first heard Boyz N The Hood. I mostly remember the bass bumping and the tone and flow of Eazy’s voice. Very strange and unique sound to me. I had never heard any rap music. Although I was not able to understand the lyrics do the the high bass coming from the system woofers, it was a sound that caught my attention and curiosity. Ever since that day i was a complete fan of Eazy. That was my introduction to Eazy-E’s music and Ruthless.
I will tell you all more about it soon.
For now I just want to pay my respects to The Godfather of Gangsta Rap Eric (Eazy-E) Wright . Your memory and legacy live forever. RIP
